JAKARTA: Textile industry consumption to the synthetic fiber raw materials is projected to reach 650,000 tons this year, increased 8.3% compared with 2009 which amounted to 600,000 tons.
Such increase was caused by stable price of one of the textile industry raw materials.
Based on data from Indonesia Synthetic Producers Association (Apsyfi), synthetic fiber prices had touched US$1.4 a kilogram in April and May 2012. However, the price dropped to US$1.3 per kilogram in June.
the condition was different if compared to natural fiber (cotton) price which tends to fluctuate.
In April 2012, the cotton price had touched US$2.2 a kilogram. The price then dropped quite drastically to US$1.95 a kilogram. Even, the price had ever touched US$1.8 a kilogram in June.
Secretary General of Apsyfi said the consumption growth towards the raw materials was caused by the price which relatively stable from month to month.
She said the textile industry was likely to choose cotton in 2009 because the price is fairly stable at the time. Previously, cotton and synthetic fibers consumption were relatively balanced, 600,000 tons per year.
With the fickle market conditions, the cotton price also contracted so that textile industry producers changed their raw materials to synthetic fiber that has fairly stable price.
Currently, the consumption of synthetic fibers reached 650,000 per year, while cotton fell to 550,000 per year.
Although the cotton consumptions are less than the synthetic fibers, at least 98% of the cotton supply is still dependent on imported products.
The other 2% is produced by the domestic industry. (T07/TW)
