SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co. bought mSpot Inc., a provider of Web-based music and video content, as Asia’s largest electronics maker adds applications for mobile devices.
Services provided by mSpot that let users access music and video using so-called cloud-computing technology will be a “key integrated offering” on new Samsung mobile devices, the companies said in a statement yesterday. Terms, including the value of the acquisition, weren’t disclosed.
The purchase is Samsung’s first of a software maker, said Nam Ki Yung, a company spokesman. South Korea-based Samsung, which topped Apple Inc. in smartphone shipments in the first quarter, is seeking to reduce its reliance on external software makers and bolster its offerings to compete with applications accessible on the iPhone and iPad.
Samsung will fully take over Palo Alto, California-based mSpot’s assets including technology and human resources, according to the statement. (Bloomberg/T05)
