MAKASSAR: PT Perusda Sulsel plans buy 10% shares of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, formerly known as PT International Nickel Indonesia Tbk (Inco).

President Director of PT Perusda Sulsel Haris Hodi said the plan to purchase shares of the company has considered the profile of Vale Indonesia which most of the shares is now owned by Brazilian company Vale SA, and its shares can be owned by several countries.

"Moreover, PT Vale Indonesia is a public company, thus it is an opportunity for us to own the company's stock," said Haris today, Wednesday, May 8, 2012.

According to him, in terms of existing legislation, local governments through local companies can also become the owner of a company, with ownership of 10%.

He expressed the opportunity is purposely targeted because in 2013 or 2014 there will be provision which bans raw nickel export. Thus nickel should be exported in the form of finished goods. So, there should be a nickel industry, especially in South Sulawesi.

"With the ownership of Vale shares, South Sulawesi will not only becomes a recipient of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and taxes, but also the province will get dividends or profits from the company," he explained.(T03/aph)
