JAKARTA: The local sales of motorcycle slumped in the first quarter of 2012, but instead export of motorcycle soared 117% compared to the same period of last year.
Indonesian Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (AISI)’s data showed the sales of motorcycle in a period of January-March declined 3.1% to 1.93 million units from 1.99 million units in the same period of last year.
However, motorcycle export in the same period jumped 117% to 18,370 units from 8,445 units. “The growing export is due to several models in Indonesia becoming a production basis in the region,” Chairman of Commercial Affairs of AISI Sigit Kumala yesterday.
Totally, export capacity of AISI’s members was recorded by 0.9% of local sales of motorcycle at 1.93 million units in the first quarter of 2012.
One of members of AISI informed the motorcycle export in the first quarter of 2012 was dominated by Suzuki with 10,638 units, then Yamaha with 2,900 units, Kawasaki with 2,890 units, TVS with 1,242 units, and Honda with 700 units. (t01/aph)
