JAKARTA: Ministry of transportation targeted new airport in Karawang, West Java to begin its construction in 2015 will be financed by private investors and state-owned enterprises.
The Ministry’s Air Transportation Director General Herry Bakti S Gumay said JICA has finished the feasibility study and the ministry only needs to wait them to present the result in front of several ministries.
He added that the ministry will ask privates and state-owned enterprises to finance Karawang Airport construction.
“Government will probably provide funds for acquiring the land, the rest will be handed to privates or SOE using public-private partnership (PPP),” he said without explaining the total budget of this new airport.
Herry explained the Karawang airport will be an additional airport in Jakarta, given the demand for air transportation in Jakarta has increased rapidly.
According to him, though Soekarno-Hatta airport will remain to be developed by adding the third runway and the fourth air terminal, it wont be enough to fulfill the air transportation demands in Jakarta and surrounding areas.
Last year, he added, passing through Soekarno-Hatta has 51 million passengers. With the current growth, in recent years is estimated to have exceeded 70 million, so there must be another airport.
Herry said the ministry of transportation with other related ministries will asses JICA’s presentation after the feasibility test for Karawang airport construction plan has done.
He explained the Karawang airport master plan will be as large as Soekarno-Hatta Airport, with the total area of 3 km x 3 km. (T07/MSW)
