JAKARTA: Smart phone with Android operating system is getting a place in consumers’ heart this year.

Indonesia GfK data stated the percentage of Android phones in January to June 2012 period reached 36.64% of the total smartphone market. In the past year, the Android phones had only reached 16.26%.

GfK Indonesia Senior Account Manager Johan Pangaribuan said the increase was caused by various factors, including market education. In addition, the increased availability of handsets from global and local brands also boosted the use of Android phones.

"They [the vendors] are large enough to invest through special outlets which provide education about the Android operating system supported by human resources to run the program," he said when contacted by Bisnis, Monday (8/13/2012).

For instance, Samsung has opened a special booth at some point since last year. So does with other vendors, such as Sony Mobile and HTC.

The increased increased purchasing power also spurred Android phone sales growth. Consumers who previously used feature phones changed to smart phones.

"Andorid exploited a crack in the market which using BlackBerry operating system by presenting variety of more diverse and interesting features," he explained.

However, Johan has not seen any indication of phone with Android operating system will dominate the smart phone market in Indonesia.

"Today consumers in Indonesia are still texting-minded so the Blackberry will remain a choice through its Black Berry messenger service," says Johan.

Indonesia is very potential market for handset vendors. The total mobile phone market by the end of this year is projected to reach 56.54 million units, up 8.88% compared with last year. (T07/msw)
