JAKARTA: Ministry of Cooperatives and Small-Medium Businesses facilitates the construction of 84 modern shops managed by cooperatives, as a strategy in marketing products from small and medium businesses.
The modern shops, dubbed as UKM Mart, are developed from general small shops managed by cooperatives.
“The facilitation worth IDR65 million in cash, for constructing each UKM Mart. The fund is provided through social aid program,” said Deputy Minister Neddy Rafinaldy Halim, who is in charge of small business and cooperatives marketing and network.
Minister of Cooperatives and Small-Medium Businesses Sjarifuddin Hasan will launch the government facility program along with the inauguration of one traditional market in Magelang, Central Java in November.
Neddy added that there would be four UKM Marts in Magelang, making the city as the chosen place for the launching. Moreover, there will be total 84 UKM Marts in Indonesia.
The construction of this kind of shop will give benefit for producers of local commodities. The Ministry, as the direct supervisor of cooperatives and small businesses, allows all products to be marketed through UKM Mart.
“There are standard requirements for commodities to be marketed there, depending on the cooperatives that manage the UKM Mart. But the requirements are not as strict as the ones to enter modern big shops,” said Neddy.
The shops have the same facilities as modern retail shops, which are clean, convenient and equipped with air conditioner. Producers of any commodities have the chance to use the facility.
As those shops are developed from general small shops, the standard minimum size is 6 meters x 12 meters. Transaction in the shops is equipped with computer, which reflects the shops' modern management.
“The are 186,907 cooperatives in Indonesia. If 10% of the total have general shops developed into modern shops, then UKM Mart will become a big force,” said Neddy.
Each UKM Mart will have a special brand, which will be its identity. All workers in the shop will also get special uniform like the ones for the workers in other modern shops. (t04/ags)
