SURABAYA: The government will finalize new farmer benchmark price (HPP) for soybean after Eid ul-Fitr since it still need to discuss the determination of rupiah rate with related parties.
Minister of Trade Gita Wirjawan stated the government will immediately find solutions for soybean issues, including the plan to set the HPP for soybean. However, such finalization can't be carried out before Eid ul-Fitr.
"We need to discuss the fair figure for soybean benchmark price with farmers. Clearly, the price should be attractive to farmers," he said after monitoring the price of nine kinds of basic needs in Wonokromo market, Surabaya.
The trade minister ensures the HPP will be applied along with the regulation of soybean trade system. One of regulations includes reviewing import tax free on soybean.
Moreover, such exemption is only valid until December. The government has prerogative right to change it.
According to him, there should be no import duty after the issuance of HPP and trade system. However, the ministry will collectively discuss the matter with other related ministries.
"In the soybean trade system, the government will focus on the interest of farmers and consumers. There must be a balance in the trade system. If not the farmers can choose to plant other commodities." (T06/aph)
