JAKARTA: The government cancelled subsidized fuel restriction policy plan over the size of car engine since it’s considered more harmful and difficult to implement.
Instead, the government formulates five policies to control the use of subsidized fuel and increase the number of public fuel station in several area using random system.
According to Minister of Energy Jero Wacik, the government will have difficulty in implementing the policy if they issue regulation on fuel restriction based on car engine size.
“Therefore, we postpone this kind of regulation. There will be no restriction based on engine size,” he said after the cabinet meeting about energy issues with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in President Palace on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
From five policies to control the use of subsidized fuel, the first, prohibition for state-owned vehicle or bureaucrat’s service vehicle to use subsidized fuel with target area of Greater Jakarta, Java, and Bali.
“The policy for state-owned vehicle is regulated through the Energy Ministry Decree and it has been approved by the government.”
Second, mining and plantation vehicle is prohibited to use subsidized fuel and it is required to use non-subsidized fuel under supervision from local government.
Third, to accelerate gas conversion program in Java Island.
Fourth, to forbid PT PLN in establishing oil-fueled power plant so that the power plant construction policy should be based on hydropower, solar, geothermal, and coal.
Fifth, implementing electricity efficiency program in government’s buildings. In this case, Jero added, the ministry will formulate regulation that regulates the use of electricity and water for government’s buildings. (T06/msw)
