JAKARTA: The government will exempt import duties for soybean and gave discretion to tofu and tempeh producers’ cooperation to import directly in order to overcome the scarcity and rising prices in the country.
Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa said the government has decided two soybean-related policies today in the food coordination meetings, and will be implemented this month until the end of 2012.
"Prices have to come down at least equal to the facilities provided [5%]. We expect the price to go down even more," said Hatta answering reporters' questions at the Attorney General's office, Wednesday (25/07/2012).
Two related government decisions related to soybeans, first, facilitate and provide flexibility to tofu and tempeh producer’s cooperation to directly import soybeans.
This measure will be facilitated by the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Cooperatives, and Ministry of Industry.
Secondly, exempt the 5% soybean import duties until the end of this year. it will be strictly supervised by the Ministry of Trade and Directorate General of Customs.
Moreover, Hatta said China has to import large amounts of soybeans.
Government will encourage farmers to continue to increase soybean production and take advantage of the situation on world markets which is currently on shortages of these commodities. (T07/msw)
