JAKARTA: The growth of Indonesian import from US may increase by 3%, following a plan of cooperation in trade between 17 small and medium enterprises from US and 75 local companies today.
According to Indonesia-US Parliamentary Caucus Vice Chairman Bobby Adhitoyo Rizaldi, at least 17 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from US are in talk to conduct trade cooperation with Indonesia to enlarge export volume in their country.
“The sector is very diverse, ranging from heavy machinery, spare part, power plan, retail, security, to services in sort of sharing technology,” said Bobby in Business Development Conference and Trade Mission, US Commercial Service-Trade Winds-Asia in Jakarta on Monday, May 21, 2012.
The growth of Indonesian import is a good thing if the products are marketed in form of raw or semi-finished product. The right product import, he added, will likely increase domestic manufacturing activity.
“Local industries will conduct the processing activity if most imports are in form of spare part. For example import of seeds, we will develop it here and set the plant as well as distribution. It will boost the industry,” he said.
In order to avoid trade balance deficit with US, he urged businesspeople to increase export in form of finished product simultaneously. It can be done in an effort to develop down streaming.
He also expects reciprocal treatment in the US trading markets, including allowing the entry of export products from Indonesia such as crude palm oil (CPO) and paper.
The investments will likely increase following the trade cooperation of business to business between US companies and Indonesia. In fact, the trade activity will encourage those companies to build processing plant.
He said the government has made a breakthrough of regulation by providing incentives for foreign company like tax holiday, tax allowance, and tax treaty with several countries.
“Such breakthrough of regulation could make the investment climate more conducive. Although the taxes in Singapore are only 7% and ours is 28%, it can be covered,” he said.
The value of Indonesian non-oil and gas import from US grew 14.25% or US$1.6 billion in January-February 2012 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to data from Ministry of Trade. (T06/aph)
